FCT Polls: INEC lifts ban on campaigns

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced the commencement of electioneering campaigns for political parties participating in the 2026 Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Area Council elections.

According to the directive, campaigns are allowed to resume on Wednesday, September 24, 2025, and terminate at midnight on Thursday, February 19, 2026.

INEC also emphasized that all parties and candidates must be granted unhindered access to public facilities for media engagements, outdoor advertising, rallies, and meetings.

In a statement signed by Sam Olumekun, INEC National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, the commission explained that the decision aligns with Section 95(2) of the Electoral Act, 2022.

The law prohibits the use of incumbency to confer undue advantage or disadvantage on any party or candidate.

Our correspondent reports that the FCT Area Council elections are scheduled to hold on Saturday, February 21, 2026.
