The Federal Government College Ugwolawo Old Students Association, FGCUOSA Kogi state chapter has reincarnated old inter house sporting rivalry through artistic and mesmerizing display that epitomizes the sustenance of mutual love and bonding which was the creed of their alma mater.
The FGCUOSA members and their families gave account of the stuff they were made of at the maiden Inter House Family Games held at the open field of Baptist Group of Schools, opposite Dunamis Church Ganaja Junction, on Saturday in Lokoja.
The old students and their families in their thousands thronged the venue to entertain, wine and dine with long time friends aimed at bringing back the sweet memories of their stay at the Federal Government College Ugwolawo.
The families and quests who were entertained with good display of mastery in five aside football, Ludo, tug of war, Chess, whot, Scrabble and family relay, were also spoiled to sumptuous delicacies while good music rented the air.
The Sporting activities competed by the four main houses of the school – Udama, Uredo, Egecha and Ufedo Houses, the names that connotes love and bonds by the school were in primary, secondary and adult categories.
Speaking during the presentation of awards to deserving houses, the chairman of the organising committee for the event, Dr. Joel Awodi Ochalla disclosed that the essence of the reunion is to relive and re-echo the old sporting rivalries while in the school, adding that the motive is to bring together, friends and acquaintances for the sweet memories of their formative years in the school.
The Chairman noted that the Association decided to rekindle that old rivalries in the area of sports and bonding, stating that the event was to showcase the good old days with their families and to inculcated the spirit of love and oneness among the children of the old students of their alma mater, just like their parents did in their times.
He said the group hoped to make it an annual event to continue to unifying the families of the old students irrespective of the set or year of graduation.
He commended the members who have contributed their time and resources to host this epoch making reunion beginning from the Kogi state chapter of the association.
According to him, “everything we needed was contributed by corporate organizations promoted by our members who lives in Kogi state. Our members living in Lokoja are all here with their families. The razzmatazz and colorfulness of this occasion was marvelous.
“We are always ahead of other branches. In 2018 we had a global reunion where we came from all over the world. It was spectacular. Once again, we are setting the bar for other branches. Lokoja branch has been ahead to set standard for other councils and most importantly, this occasion is for us to bond, unify our families to keep fit in sports as some of our members have not played football for a long time, but today they are doing so in the glare of their families. The atmosphere is friendly with family bonds and I’m overwhelmed that the event is totally successful and we hope to make it an annual diadem.”
In his remark, the secretary of the fund raising and secretary of the organising committees, Hon. Samuel Jibrin Dunga, alluded the success to some of their members who used their corporate organizations to donate money and materials far in essence of the budget.
He said it was imperative for the Lokoja branch of FGCUOSA to launch the event when children are on holidays so that the children can experience the kind of love, unity and bonds that existed among their parents while they were like them in school.
“As you can see, children of different families are running around freely playing and making friends,the way we are The essence is for our children to grow and imbibe that attitude and spirit of friendliness and bond together. So that , they can be continuity. This is a maiden edition and we put up a committee to organize this event and I’m glad that all went well beyond our imaginations. We are confident that it will become an annual show during summer when our children are on holidays.”
He disclosed that smarting from the huge success of this innovation, the reunion of the National body would converge on Benin, Edo state in November 2025 where members from home and in the diaspora for the growth and development of the association.
He challenged other branches to emulate Kogi chapter to willingly donate their wherewithal for the success of the event.
He congratulated the members who used their time, talents and resources to making the occasion tick and urge them to keep the bond aglow.
Highlights of the occasion was the presentation of awards and recognition to children and adults who participated in sports such as five aside football, Chess, Scrabble; Ludo, Draft, Sacks run, family relay, tug of war etc even as the Egacha House coast home with the overall trophy.
