FirstBank’s 131 Years Commitment To Development Of Sporting Talent In Nigeria Unwavering – Alebiosu 

LAGOS  – The managing Director /CEO FirstBank Group, Olusegun Alebiosu, has stated that FirstBank’s commitment to the development of sporting talent in Nigeria has been unwavering forover 131years. 

Alebiosu, who made the declaration in his good will message at the recent Commissioning of the FirstBank Basketball & Games Arena at, Nigerian Army 9 Brigade Cantonment, emphasised the commitment of the nation’s premier bank to empowering communities, fostering sports development, and partners with stakeholders to drive progress. 

According to him, FirstBank’s support of sports has been consistent, strengthening the popularity and rich heritage of several sporting events. 

The Bank, he said, has a women’s basketball club First Bank Basketball Club(popularly called ElephantGirls) currently representing Nigeria in the final round of the Women’s Basketball League Africa(WBLA) in Cairo, Egypt. 

“The team won the silver medal at the Zenith Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF) Women’s Premier League in 2025”, he said. 

He said: “It is a pleasure to be here today among a community that embodies courage, order, and exceptional service to our nation. To the leadership and personnel of the Nigerian Army 9 Brigade Cantonment, thank you for welcoming us not just as partners, but as neighbours. 

”Today, we commission the FirstBank Basketball & Games Arena to create spaces that inspire connection, support youth development, and open doors to opportunity. This arena is one of those spaces. 

“Positioned beside our branch, it symbolises partnership, presence, and commitment. It serves as a vibrant recreational centre for over 25,000 personnel and dependents, offering a recreational hub where teamwork, discipline and wellness can flourish. And who knows, Nigeria’s next basketball standout might just emerge from this very court. 

“Our support for this community also extends beyond physical infrastructure. Through products like FirstMobile for secure transactions and FirstAdvance for short-term financial support, we remain committed to enhancing the everyday lives of the officers, women, and families who form the backbone of this cantonment. 

“We appreciate the Brigade Commander and the leadership team for your collaboration, from remodeling to branding and now commissioning. Your guidance and partnership made this project seamless and impactful. 

“As we officially commission this arena, our hope is that it becomes a place where young talents are nurtured, friendships are built, and a strong sense of community is deepened. 

“Thank you for your service. Thank you for your partnership. And thank you for welcoming FirstBank into your everyday experience, on duty days, off-duty days, and especially, on game days”. 

He specifically said:”The Bank has been a driving force in the promotion of sports in the country, and this is evident in its legacy sports initiatives, which include Golf, Polo and Tennis, and has sponsored the Lagos Amateur Golf Open for 64y ears and the Georgian Polo Cup for 105years”.
