National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has reported that five people lost their lives and 55 others were injured due to flooding in parts of Yola, the capital of Adamawa State.
Head of Operations at NEMA’s Yola office, Mr. Ladan Ayuba, confirmed that the injured are receiving medical care at Modibbo Adama Teaching Hospital in Yola.
According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), the flooding occurred early Sunday morning following heavy rainfall, submerging homes in several wards of Yola, including Tashan Sani, Shagari Phase II, Sabon Pegi, Anguwan Tabo, Modire, Ummare, Yolde-Pate, Sanda Fadama II, and Ibnu Abbas.
Rescue operations involving boats are underway in these areas.
NEMA, alongside the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), the Red Cross, and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), is actively engaged in ongoing rescue efforts.
A resident of Yolde-Pate, Ali Adam, expressed gratitude for the swift response from officials but noted that the area had never experienced such severe flooding.
He called on the state government to intervene and address a company allegedly responsible for constructing a dam, which he claimed contributed to the flooding beyond the impact of the rainfall.
Similarly, Yakubu Musa from Modire urged the state government to convert a major culvert in the area into a bridge to better manage large water flows.
He also highlighted the need to clear waterways obstructed by rice farmers.
Many displaced residents have sought shelter in emergency camps and primary schools as relief efforts continue.
