Former Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Ibrahim Tanko Muhammad, GCON (rtd.), has passed away at the age of 71, after a brief illness.
He died in a hospital in Saudi Arabia.
The news of his demise has drawn widespread grief across the country, particularly within the legal community.
The death of the former head of the judiciary has been described as a moment of national loss, with tributes pouring in from across Nigeria’s political and judicial landscape.
Leading the condolences, the Chairman of the Northern States Governors’ Forum (NSGF) and Governor of Gombe State, Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya, CON, expressed deep sorrow over the passing of the retired Chief Justice.
Speaking on behalf of his colleagues, Governor Inuwa Yahaya described Justice Muhammad’s death as “a significant loss to Nigeria, particularly to the judiciary and the legal profession.” He said the news was received with profound sadness across the northern states.
According to the governor, the late jurist lived a life marked by “integrity, humility and commitment to justice,” virtues that defined his long and distinguished career on the Bench.
He noted that throughout his years in judicial service, Justice Muhammad consistently upheld the highest ideals of the judiciary, earning respect for his fairness, courage and unwavering devotion to the rule of law.
Governor Inuwa Yahaya added that during his tenure as Chief Justice of Nigeria, the late jurist discharged his responsibilities with wisdom and restraint, leaving behind a legacy of service that will continue to inspire generations of legal practitioners.
The NSGF Chairman extended heartfelt condolences to the immediate family of the deceased, the government and people of Bauchi State, as well as members of the judiciary, praying that Almighty Allah forgives his shortcomings and grants him Aljannat Firdaus.
