The Lagos State Chairman of the African Democratic Congress, ADC,
George Ashiru, alongside his key executive members on Thursday warmly welcomed former member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Board of Trustees who was also a former minister, Dr. Abimbola Ogunkelu Ashorobi at the party secretariat in Lagos.
A statement issued by Mabel Oboh, the Director of Communications for the Lagos State ADC, stated that Ogunkelu’s defection to ADC in August, which occurred simultaneously across all 20 Local Government Areas (LGAs) of Lagos State marks a significant political shift that brings a wave of substantial support into the ADC.
Accompanying Dr Ogunkelu, according to the statement, were notable party figures, including Retired Captain Tunji Shelle, Chief Muritala Ashorobi, Adeniyi Adams, Alhaji M.M. Ashorobi, Tai Benedict, Joy Nweke, and Chief Oshoba, as well as Dr Segun Osho, among others, representing a considerable faction of former PDP members.
Oboh stated that Dr Ogunkelu, in his address expressed his purpose for visiting the ADC leadership which, he said, was primarily to express gratitude for the warm reception extended to the defectors from the PDP.
He reiterated his commitment to assisting the ADC in unseating the ruling party, the APC, in the upcoming 2027 elections, stating, “We cherish the ADC leadership, and I assure you that the numerous PDP members who defected with me stand firmly behind the ADC’s vision.”
He emphasised that unity and solidarity would be pivotal as they work together to uplift the citizens of Lagos and combat the pervasive poverty affecting many communities.
“We are proud to join a progressive party that values inclusivity and treats everyone like family,” he added.
In his welcome remarks, ADC Lagos state Chairman, George Ashiru expressed his excitement regarding the solidarity shown by these prominent politicians, viewing it as a clear indication of the ADC’s expanding influence and strength throughout Lagos State.
He highlighted the party’s commitment to empowering women and youth, promising a 50% participation rate for both groups in ADC’s political processes.
While framing the ADC as more than just a political organisation, Ashiru declared, “The ADC is a movement—a movement aimed at transforming the political landscape of Lagos State and, by extension, that of Nigeria.
With the dedication of Dr Ogunkelu and his colleagues, we are optimistic about securing victory in the upcoming elections.”
He also vowed to ensure that the party remains inclusive, transparent, and accountable to its members and the broader public.
The ADC has made notable strides, as Ashiru pointed out, with increased grassroots support and successful mobilisation efforts across Lagos’ diverse local government areas, he said.
He also expressed optimism that the addition of the new members would enhance the ADC’s capability to fulfil its mandate effectively.
In her remark, the Director of Communications, Mabel Oboh emphasised the importance of the familiarisation event, which discussed the ADC’s ongoing progress, strategic direction, and commitment to strengthening its political framework within Lagos State, ensuring that the party’s mandates resonate with and truly benefit the populace.
“Owing to the strategic defection of Dr Abimbola Ogunkelu Ashorobi and other key political figures, the ADC is poised to bolster its prospects significantly as it gears up for the 2027 elections.
“The party’s increasing strength and influence are expected to present formidable challenges to both the ruling APC and other opposition parties within the state.
“Also present during the pivotal gathering were ADC Lagos State executives, including Festus Duru, the State Secretary, and Dr Mohammed Ogidi, the State Organising Secretary, along with my humble self, Mabel Oboh, ADC Lagos Director of Communications” she declared.
