Fubara confirms rift with Wike, Rivers lawmakers over

The Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, said on Friday the rift with the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyeson Wike, has been fully resolved.

The governor stated this in a statewide broadcast shortly after he returned to the Government House in Port Harcourt.

He added that the crisis which plagued the oil-rich stare for two years was over and peace has returned to the land.

The two men fell out in September 2023 over control of the state affairs.

The crisis brought the state to its knee with group and individuals, including members of the State House of Assembly queueing behind the two combatants.

President Bola Tinubu’ declared a state of emergency in the state over the prolonged crisis on March 18.

He also suspended Fubara, his deputy, Prof. Ngozi Odu and members of the Assembly for six months over their roles in the crisis.

The President, however, lifted the state of emergency on Wednesday, paving the way for the governor and other suspended persons to return to their seats.

In the broadcast, Fubara said the resolution of the disagreement with his predecessor  was a key step towards lasting peace in the state.

He added that the emergency rule was challenging but ultimately allowed all parties to reconcile.

The governor said: “In the course of the six-month period, Mr. President graciously brokered the peace process with all the parties successfully.

“Our Leader, His Excellency, Nyesom Ezenwo Wike, CON, all members of the Rivers State House of Assembly and I, as your Governor, have all accepted to bury the hatchet and embrace peace and reconciliation in the best interest of our dear Rivers State. “
