• Japanese players celebrating their victory Japan produced a stunning second-half comeback to claim their first-ever victory over Brazil in an international friendly played in Tokyo.
Carlo Ancelotti’s Brazil took the lead in the 26th minute when Paulo Henrique smashed in a powerful strike after being fed by Newcastle midfielder Bruno Guimaraes. Arsenal forward Gabriel Martinelli doubled the advantage just six minutes later, finishing low after a pass from West Ham’s Lucas Paqueta.
But Japan mounted an impressive fightback after the interval. Former Liverpool forward Takumi Minamino pulled one back shortly after the hour mark, and Keito Nakamura made it 2-2 soon after.
The turnaround was completed in the 71st minute when Ayase Ueda rose to head home the winner, sealing a memorable victory for the hosts.
Ancelotti, who took charge of Brazil in May, had already guided the team to qualification for the 2026 World Cup in Canada, Mexico and the United States, earning four points from his first two qualifiers. Brazil also beat South Korea 5-0 in a friendly on Friday, but could not maintain their lead against Japan.
The Brazilian starting XI featured several Premier League stars, with Guimaraes, Martinelli, Paqueta and Manchester United’s Casemiro all in the lineup. In the second half, Chelsea winger Estevao, Manchester United forward Matheus Cunha, Newcastle’s Joelinton, and Tottenham striker Richarlison also featured.
Japan, who have also already secured qualification for the 2026 World Cup, began with Crystal Palace midfielder Daichi Kamada, while Leeds United’s Ao Tanaka came on as a substitute.
