Majority Chief Whip Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor has firmly denied claims that Majority Members of Parliament were withdrawn from committee sittings, insisting that no such directive was issued.
His remarks follow claims of sudden withdrawal of Majority members from the Public Accounts Committee committee sitting, forcing proceedings to be halted.
“We did not withdraw our members,” Mr. Dafeamekpor stressed. “We only asked that committee sittings be suspended briefly so Members could focus on the main business of the House.”
According to the Majority Chief Whip, the decision taken was a temporary and strategic suspension of committee work during critical plenary proceedings, not a withdrawal of members as has been suggested in some quarters.
He explained that such measures are sometimes necessary to ensure that Parliament is adequately constituted to handle key business on the floor of the House.
“When there is important business before the House, it is only proper that Members are present in plenary. Committees can always reconvene after adjournment,” he noted.
Mr. Dafeamekpor further emphasised that Parliament operates within a clearly defined framework, guided by its Standing Orders.
He explained that the Business Committee meets weekly—typically on Fridays—to determine the schedule for the upcoming week, including the timing of sittings and committee activities.
Members of Parliament, he said, are duly informed in advance, allowing committees to plan their meetings without clashing with plenary.
