A tense police operation in Dormaa-Gonokrom has ended with one suspected armed robber dead following a shootout with officers on patrol in the Bono Region.
According to the Ghana Police Service, the deceased was believed to be a member of a notorious robbery gang that has been terrorising communities within the region.
Police said intelligence received on February 11, 2026, revealed plans by the gang to attack traders travelling along the Dormaa Gonokrom highway.
In response, surveillance and patrol teams were immediately deployed to the area to prevent the intended attack and protect road users.
The operation intensified in the early hours of February 12, when officers advancing near a parked motorbike were suddenly attacked by suspected robbers hiding in nearby bushes.
Police returned fire in self-defence. When the area was searched at daybreak, one male suspect was found dead with an AK47 rifle lying beside him. No police casualties were reported.
A further search of the surroundings led to the recovery of a sack containing several weapons and items believed to have been intended for criminal activity.
These included additional assault rifles, single-barreled guns, a pump action gun, a pistol with ammunition, cartridges, a dagger, a mobile phone, a Honda motorbike, a black mask and a set of talismans.
The body of the deceased has been deposited at the Police Hospital morgue for preservation, identification and autopsy.
Police say investigations are ongoing to track down other members of the gang who managed to escape during the exchange.
A police statement said, “We remain committed to protecting lives and property, and we urge the public to continue supporting us with credible information.”
The Bono Regional Police Command has assured residents that intensified patrols will continue as part of efforts to improve safety and restore confidence along major roads in the region.
