‘Golden People’: Governor Eno Says Albinism Was Used Against Him in 2023 Election

UYO, Nigeria — Governor Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom has revealed that he endured ridicule and rejection over his albinism during the 2023 gubernatorial campaign, describing how opponents weaponised his skin condition against him in a bid to discredit his candidacy.

In a video message shared on X, the governor reflected on the challenges of living with albinism, which is caused by a genetic condition that reduces melanin in the skin, hair, and eyes. The result is very pale skin and significant vision impairments.

“When we started this campaign, some people who did not have what to say, they said they did not want an albino governor. Do you remember?” Eno said.

“Then my dear wife came out and said to them, you may be an albino, but to me, you are my golden boy.”

He described people with albinism as “a golden people” and honoured children living with the condition.

“Albinos are a golden people, and they have a golden governor,” he told his audience.

The governor recounted his personal journey of stigma and rejection.

“Growing up with albinism wasn’t easy; I faced bullying, body shaming, and rejection. But today, by God’s grace, I stand proudly,” he wrote on social media.

“That’s why whenever I see anyone with this skin condition, I make it a point to honour and recognise them.”

Eno stressed that individuals with albinism are often denied opportunities and dignity in society.

“They would not give us a chance in the past. They would body shame us. They would call us names. They would not let us come to the public. But today, God has brought us out. So anywhere I see one of any of them, I must recognise them.”

The governor’s remarks have drawn attention to the challenges faced by persons living with albinism in Nigeria and across Africa, where myths, stigma, and discrimination persist.
