November 08, (THEWILL) — Taraba State Governor, Dr Agbu Kefas, has approved the establishment of a 23-member Joint Technical Committee to drive the development of the sugar industry in the state.

The committee, which is expected to chart a new course for sugar production, processing, and investment in Taraba, will be chaired by Hon. Jethro Yakubu Zikyengyu, while Abel Bako Joachim, from the Ministry of Agriculture, will serve as the secretary.

According to a statement signed by the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Yusuf Sanda, the committee draws membership from government agencies, private sector players, farmers, traditional rulers, and community leaders, reflecting a broad-based approach to agricultural development.

The committee’s terms of reference include promoting and facilitating the growth of the sugar industry, engaging relevant stakeholders, developing a comprehensive sugar development plan, and identifying suitable locations for sugar cultivation and processing.

It will also work to mobilise funding, equipment, and technical expertise to strengthen the value chain.

The statement further noted that the committee’s activities will be coordinated by the Chief of Staff to the Governor, Dr Jeji Williams (mni), and that the team has three months to submit its report and recommendations to the state government.

Governor Kefas, through the initiative, aims to unlock the state’s agricultural potential and diversify its economy by positioning Taraba as a viable hub for sugar production in Nigeria.
