Kogi State Governor, Ahmed Usman Ododo, has commenced construction of the 12.5-kilometre Unosi–Odonto–Ogigiri rural road, describing the project as a critical step toward boosting agricultural productivity and improving infrastructure in Ajaokuta Local Government Area.

The initiative, being implemented under the Rural Access and Agricultural Marketing Project (RAAMP), is designed to open up farmlands, markets, schools, health facilities and other social amenities to communities along the route.

Speaking at the flag-off ceremony in Ogigiri, Governor Ododo reaffirmed his administration’s focus on inclusive growth through investments that prioritize agriculture, education, healthcare and other essential services for underserved areas.

A statement issued by the Government House Media Team quoted him as saying: “This project signifies a bold declaration of our administration’s unbending commitment to inclusive development, rural prosperity and the transformation of agriculture in Kogi State.”

The governor explained that the road, when completed, will ensure all-season access, cut travel time and lower transportation costs for rural dwellers.

“This corridor which is in the agricultural heartland of Ajaokuta Local Government holds strategic significance. It links clusters of farming communities that contribute greatly to our state’s food security. Today marks the beginning of an end to their transportation challenges,” he said.

Ododo added that the road construction reflects RAAMP’s mission to strengthen rural networks, improve market access and reduce post-harvest losses.

Commissioner for Rural and Energy Development, Engr. Mohammed Abdulmutalib, highlighted the road’s importance as an economic lifeline connecting farm clusters that will help drive food security and foster trust in the state’s rural economy.

National RAAMP Coordinator, Engr. Aminu Bodinga, said the project aligns with the development priorities of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Governor Ododo, noting that Kogi will benefit from an additional 1,500 kilometres of rural road construction under the current partnership.

“This is more than just construction. It is about building resilience in our rural economy, supporting agricultural value chains, and ensuring that no community is left behind,” he said.

He added that residents living along the road will receive training in basic maintenance to ensure sustainability of the project, while urging contractors to deliver quality work on schedule.

Hon. Abdulraheem Sani Egidi, who represents Ajaokuta Federal Constituency, thanked Governor Ododo for initiating the road, stressing that it will transform the area’s economy and improve livelihoods.

Ajaokuta Local Government Chairman, Haruna Aliyu, noted that the road will connect 10 of the area’s 14 wards, calling it a major catalyst for local commerce.

Residents also praised the state government, saying the project will ease the movement of goods and services, encourage trade and raise living standards in rural communities.
