Five police officers have been killed, and one declared missing after gunmen ambushed a police patrol team on Thursday in Tsafe Local Government Area of Zamfara State.

Speaking to Channels Television on condition of anonymity for safety reasons, a Tsafe resident said the officers were on their usual patrol when the armed bandits suddenly attacked them.

According to the source, five officers were found dead at the scene, while one remains unaccounted for as security personnel continue to search the area.

The bodies of the slain officers have been taken to the Yariman Bakura Specialist Hospital in Gusau, the state capital.

The Police Public Relations Officer for Zamfara State, DSP Yazid Abubakar, confirmed the attack, explaining that it happened along the Tsafe–Funtua highway during a regular patrol.

He added that more security personnel have been sent to the area and that efforts are ongoing to find the missing officer and capture the attackers.

Meanwhile, Zamfara State Governor Dauda Lawal has expressed sadness over the killing of the security operatives.

In a statement on his Facebook page, the governor confirmed that eight security personnel, including five policemen, were killed in the ambush along the Funtua–Gusau Road.

“I received an unpleasant report of an ambush by bandits on police security officers and soldiers on the road from Funtuwa to Gusau where they killed eight officers,” the governor said.

Lawal offered his condolences to the families of the deceased officers, praying for their souls to rest in peace and for their families to find strength in this difficult time.

“May Allah (T) have mercy on them, and give their families and relatives patience for this loss. We ask Allah (T) to put an end to this security problem in the whole of Zamfara State, the North and Nigeria as a whole,” he added.
