Group Flays David Mark Over Alleged Plot To Destabilise ADC, Calls For Accountability

A group, Odua People’s Assembly (OPA), has strongly criticised former Senate President, David Mark, over what it described as a pattern of anti-democratic behaviour and a fresh attempt to destabilise the leadership of the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

The OPA emphasised its strong opposition to what it called “the tyranny of ambition” and warned against the continued manipulation of democratic institutions by elite interests.

A statement on Saturday signed by Kayode Richard Olatunji, National Chairman of the OPA, the group accused Mark of spearheading moves to forcibly take over the ADC, warning that such actions constitute a direct assault on Nigeria’s democratic institutions.

Olatunji said: “We find it necessary to address his recent maneuvers, to forcefully take over and destabilise the leadership of the African Democratic Congress which have once again revealed his true nature as a habitual anti-democracy element.

“He played a pivotal role in the annulment of the June 12, 1993 elections, which are widely regarded as the most credible elections in the annals of Nigerian democracy.

“The annulment of these elections, which were poised to usher in a new era of democratic governance under the leadership of Chief Moshood Abiola, was a grievous affront to the will of the Nigerian people.

“David Mark was the arrowhead of other political conspirators, who financed the infamous movement led by Arthur Nzeribe to thwart the democratic aspirations of millions of Nigerians.

“This act of sabotage marked the beginning of a dark chapter in our nation’s history, one characterised by political instability, disenfranchisement, and the erosion of democratic values.

“Since that fateful day, David Mark has positioned himself as an architect of anti-democratic actions, perpetuating a cycle of disenfranchisement and disillusionment among the populace.

“His legacy is not one of progress or unity; rather, it reflects a persistent effort to erode the pillars of democracy that countless Nigerians have fought to establish.

“The OPA believes that it is imperative to hold individuals like Mark accountable for their actions, which have resulted in a protracted struggle for democracy in our nation.

“In recent developments, we have witnessed Mark’s audacious attempt to seize control of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), a party that has long been a beacon of hope for many Nigerians seeking an alternative to the prevailing political status quo.

“This forceful takeover, orchestrated with the intent of spreading mischief and discord, is a clear indication of Mark’s relentless pursuit of power at the expense of democratic integrity.

“His actions are not only a betrayal of the party’s founding principles but also a direct affront to the democratic rights of its members and supporters.

“The Odua People’s Assembly categorically rejects Mark’s attempts to destabilise the ADC and undermine the democratic process.

“We stand firm in our belief that political parties should be governed by the principles of transparency, accountability, and respect for the will of their members.

“Any attempt to manipulate or hijack these institutions for personal gain is a threat to democracy itself.

“Furthermore, we call upon all Nigerians who cherish democracy to rise against this tyranny of ambition that seeks to stifle their voices.

“It is crucial that we remain vigilant and united in our efforts to safeguard the democratic ideals for which so many have sacrificed.

“The OPA implores the Nigerian populace to reject the machinations of individuals like David Mark, who have demonstrated time and again their commitment to anti-democratic practices.

“As we reflect on the historical context of David Mark’s actions, it is essential to recognise the broader implications of his political maneuvers.

“The annulment of the June 12 elections was not merely a political setback; it was a profound moment of betrayal that reverberated throughout the nation.

“It served as a stark reminder of the fragility of democracy in Nigeria and the lengths to which certain individuals will go to preserve their power.”

The group further called on the Federal Government to take decisive action against those who, in the past or present, have worked to sabotage Nigeria’s democracy.

He added: “The Odua People’s Assembly urges all stakeholders in the Nigerian political landscape to recommit themselves to the principles of democracy.

“We must work collectively to ensure that the voices of the people are heard and respected, and that the integrity of our democratic institutions is upheld.

“The time has come for us to reject the politics of division and embrace a future built on collaboration, respect, and genuine representation.

“The act of sabotaging and undermining a democratic government on June 12 constitutes a treasonable felony that threatens the very foundations of democratic governance.

“Such actions not only destabilise political institutions but also erode public trust in the rule of law.

“Therefore, it is imperative for the Federal Government to take decisive action against the perpetrators to ensure accountability.

“By doing so, the government would not only uphold the principles of democracy but also serve as a deterrent to others who might contemplate similar acts of treachery in the future.”
