Government College Ughelli Old Boys’ Association (GCUOBA), Lagos Branch, has announced the construction of an ultra-modern Secretariat aimed at strengthening its administrative capacity, enhancing alumni engagement, and deepening long-standing contributions to educational development in the country.
The group explained that the product is a deliberate effort to promote quality education in Nigeria, saying that the edifice would be unveiled on Saturday, December 14, 2024, in Lagos.
The high-profile gathering will celebrate alumni unity and raise funds for the development of the Ultra-Modern Secretariat building and other impactful initiatives that continue to strengthen the Association and support the growth of its alma mater, Government College Ughelli (GCU).
In a statement made available to journalists in Port Harcourt by the Association, said the Secretariat when completed, will serve as the permanent national headquarters of the Association, providing a central platform for coordinating its activities across Nigeria and the diaspora.
It is also designed to support structured planning and implementation of strategic interventions for GCU, including infrastructure upgrades, scholarship schemes, student mentorship, staff welfare, and academic excellence programmes.
In addition to its administrative functions, the facility will host conferences, leadership and professional development programmes, reunions, and youth empowerment initiatives. The project also incorporates income-generating features intended to ensure sustainable funding for future educational projects.
Speaking on the initiative, President of GCUOBA, Lagos Branch, Chief Charles Uwensuyi-Edosmwan (SAN), described the secretariat as a legacy investment that reflects the association’s commitment to preserving the heritage of Government College Ughelli while positioning it for greater impact in the years ahead.
“The GCUOBA Secretariat building project is an important step toward strengthening educational activities in Lagos State, Nigeria’s vibrant commercial hub,” he said.
On his part, Mr Okosubide Mozimo, the Vice-President and Chairman of the GCUOBA Lagos branch luncheon organising committee, noted that the N2billion secretariat project is not merely a physical structure but “a symbol of unity, continuity, and our renewed pledge to give back to the institution that shaped us.”
According to the statement, Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, is scheduled to be the host while Mr Atedo Peterside will serve as Guest of Honour.
The event will be chaired by the former governor of Cross Rivers State, Mr. Donald Duke, while the Keynote Address will be delivered by Mr Sonny Iroche, an accomplished finance and infrastructure policy expert.
The Fathers of the Day are Chief G. T. S. Adokpaye and Uncle Sam Amuka-Pemu, Publisher of Vanguard Newspaper.
GCUOBA however called on its members, corporate partners, and well-meaning Nigerians to support the realization of this landmark project, which is expected to further strengthen alumni-driven contributions to national development through education.
