Group urges coastal states to support Coast Guard Establishment Bill

The Provisional Committee for the proposed Nigerian Coast Guard (PC-NCG) has called on Nigeria’s littoral state governors to support the accelerated passage of the Nigerian Coast Guard Establishment Bill before the 10th National Assembly. The bill aims to establish a dedicated coast guard to enhance maritime safety and security in Nigeria.

According to the group, the proposed coast guard would improve Nigeria’s ability to protect its maritime zones and prevent illegal activities such as piracy and oil theft, adding that by ensuring maritime safety and security, the coast guard would contribute to the growth of Nigeria’s blue economy, generating revenue through sustainable fisheries, tourism, and maritime trade. The coast guard, it went on would work to prevent marine pollution and promote conservation practices, safeguarding Nigeria’s marine ecosystems.

The PC-NCG, led by Capt. Noah Ichaba, has praised Bayelsa State for being the first state to create a Ministry of Marine & Blue Economy. The committee has also commended Akwa Ibom State Governor, Pastor Umo Eno, for hosting the inaugural summit of the International Coastal Border Forum in Uyo.

On its objectives, the forum says that it aims to harmonize maritime laws, enhance community surveillance, and promote intelligence sharing among coastal states; seek promotion of sustainable blue growth and development in Nigeria’s coastal regions, addressing maritime security challenges and promoting environmental stewardship.

The PC-NCG is urging coastal state governors to throw their weights behind the efforts of the Hon. Minister of Marine & Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola, and other stakeholders to push for the speedy passage of the Nigerian Coast Guard Establishment Bill.
