“If I were his son, I’d advise him” – Wike ridicules Atiku over party hopping, calls him desperate

Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike , has ridiculed former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, accusing him of endlessly switching parties out of desperation to become president.

Speaking at a media parley in Abuja on Monday, Wike questioned Atiku’s commitment to party ideology, accusing him of jumping from one political platform to another in a bid to secure a presidential ticket.

“Atiku was in PDP in 1999. From there, he joined the Action Congress (AC). After AC, he returned to the PDP, later moved to the All Progressives Congress (APC), and then back to the PDP again, all in pursuit of the presidential ticket,” Wike stated.

The minister went on to throw in a personal jab at the 77-year-old politician, saying, “If I were his son, I would sit him down and ask: ‘Dad, how can you keep hopping from one party to another at almost 80 years old?’”

Wike’s criticism followed Atiku’s latest reported defection to the African Democratic Congress (ADC), a move seen as part of a coalition to challenge President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the 2027 general election.

He dismissed the coalition move as mere political strategy to remain relevant after sensing defeat within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

“The way the PDP is now, it’s unlikely that Atiku will get the presidential ticket so he’s not comfortable. That’s why he’s now pushing for a coalition,” Wike said. “It’s not about national interest; it’s about survival.”
