In the event of an electric fire, staying calm is your most powerful first step. While it’s completely natural to feel fear or panic, quick and clear thinking can make all the difference. Electrical fires often happen suddenly maybe from a faulty wire, overloaded socket, or damaged appliance. Here’s what you should do immediately if one breaks out:

2. Do NOT use water. Pouring water on an electrical fire can be deadly. Water conducts electricity and can cause severe shock. Instead, if you have one, use a Class C fire extinguisher (or an ABC-rated one, which works on electrical fires too).

3. Evacuate if the fire grows. If the fire starts to spread or you can’t control it safely, leave the building immediately and call emergency services. Don’t try to be a hero your safety comes first.

4. Close doors behind you to slow the fire’s spread.

5. Call for help. Once you’re safe, call 911 or your local fire department.
