INEC has not validated ADC state chairmen list, party says list fake

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has firmly denied claims that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has confirmed a list of the party’s state chairmen across Nigeria’s 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory.

In a statement issued on Sunday via his official X account, ADC’s National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, refuted a widely circulated report titled “Coalition Update: INEC Confirms ADC State Chairmen Nationwide.” He described the publication as “fake news” designed to sow confusion within the party and mislead the public.

“The attention of the national leadership of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) has been drawn to a widely circulated statement titled ‘Coalition Update: INEC Confirms ADC State Chairmen Nationwide,’ which purports that the Independent National Electoral Commission has released and validated a list of State Party Chairmen for the ADC across the country,” Abdullahi said.

He continued: “The Independent National Electoral Commission, to the best of our knowledge and verification, has issued no such confirmation, neither officially nor unofficially. INEC only recognises what the party submits through the appropriate channels after due process. As of today, no such comprehensive list has been submitted or confirmed by INEC.”

Abdullahi stressed that the appointment and ratification of state party leaders remain an internal process governed by the party’s constitution and protocols—not by media reports or unverified lists.

He also warned members and the public to remain vigilant against misinformation, especially at a time when the party is dealing with internal disputes and leadership restructuring. “We urge our members and stakeholders to disregard such fabricated claims. They are simply tools in the hands of those attempting to destabilise the party,” he said.

The denial comes amid ongoing internal wrangling within the ADC, particularly following INEC’s recent recognition of former Senate President David Mark as the party’s national chairman—a move that has sparked controversy and legal disputes.

The situation further escalated with reports of a court injunction barring INEC from recognising the Mark-led faction, a claim the party has also dismissed as part of a coordinated disinformation campaign. The ADC described such claims as “additional fake news from desperate political jobbers.”

Meanwhile, both Mark and the party’s National Secretary, Rauf Aregbesola, have reportedly been summoned by the court over disagreements surrounding the party’s leadership transitions.

Despite the turbulence, Abdullahi reaffirmed the ADC’s commitment to internal democracy, rule of law, and due process in resolving its affairs.
