INEC records 2.3 million new voter registrations as Osun, Imo, Kano lead

The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, on Sunday reported that 2,316,232 Nigerians have newly registered to vote nationwide, with wide variations across the states. Osun recorded the highest number of new registrations.

INEC noted that “registration is suspended in Anambra State until after the governorship election on 8th November 2025 in line with Section 9 (6) of the Electoral Act 2022,” leaving the state without figures in the latest update.

The figures cover both online and physical registrations completed during Week 12 of the continuous voter registration, CVR, exercise, which began on August 18, 2025, and is scheduled to end in August 2026.

According to the commission, Osun led with 185,089 new registrants, followed by Imo (143,386) and Kano (132,290). Sokoto recorded 123,320; Lagos, 109,693; the Federal Capital Territory, 106,855; and Borno, 106,376.

Other notable figures include Kogi (91,573), Jigawa (88,209), Zamfara (84,268), Katsina (80,425), Kaduna (78,282), Kebbi (74,159), Delta (72,311), and Ogun (71,091). Niger recorded 69,739, Akwa Ibom 65,446, and Oyo 64,561.

Rivers registered 57,251, Benue 42,557, Bayelsa 38,627, and Bauchi 36,166. Ekiti, Gombe, and Nasarawa recorded 32,096, 31,542, and 30,348 respectively, while Ebonyi, Edo, and Plateau posted 28,310, 27,130, and 24,077. Taraba had 17,803; Enugu, 16,304; Ondo, 16,012; Cross River, 14,559; and Abia, 12,297.

INEC said registration numbers have been consistently high in South-West states, particularly Osun and Lagos, while northern states are showing increased participation due to intensified voter mobilisation by local authorities, religious leaders, and community organisations.
