‘It Is A Sign Of Desperation To Say You Will Do Single-Term, Northerners Will Not Buy That Idea’ – Reuben Abati Tells Politicians

Nigerian jouranlist, Reuben Abati, has asserted that the idea of a one-term government being proposed by Labour Party (LP) 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, and other members of the opposition coalition will be ineffective.
Naija News reports that Abati made this know while speaking on Arise TV morning show on Monday, August 4, 2025.

The media personality opined it is a sign of desperation for any politician to promise a single term because it will not work.

The former presidential aide said he does not believe the Northerners who are already aggrieved with a Yoruba president will embrace the possibility of an Igbo president because the civil war in Nigeria has not ended.

He said, “Any politician that comes to you to say I am going to do only one term, that is a sign of desperation. It will not work. Just like all this gambit about serving food, carrying plates and doing boy boy at parties that could be better organized by event organizers is also a sign of desperation. It doesn’t work. It will never work.

“The second challenge is that you said the North will buy into this idea of one-term. No! The North will not because the civil war in this country has never ended. I don’t believe that Northerners who are already aggrieved with a Yoruba President will just shift and embrace the possibility of an Igbo president. There are contradictions in this country that has not been sorted out. “
