Jamie Lee Curtis narrowly missed meeting Princess Diana nearly three decades ago, while filming Fierce Creatures, the actor shared in an Instagram post marking the 28th anniversary of the princess’s passing.
The Oscar-winning actor shared a photo of Diana wearing a red houndstooth jacket, holding out her arms to her two sons, Prince William and Prince Harry, writing that they nearly crossed paths on the set of a movie. “She was to visit the set of the follow up to A Fish Called Wanda, Fierce Creatures, and we were shooting at Pinewood deep into the forest there,” Curtis writes. But when they finally took a break from filming, the actor needed to drive a golf cart a “mile back to the dressing room block to use the restroom.”
Curtis’s driver tried to warn her that the princess had arrived, but by the time she got back to set, “she was walking away and I wasn’t going to chase her to tell her how much I admired her,” she writes.
Frustrated but touched by this missed encounter, Curtis decided to write the princess a heartfelt letter, explaining her absence and expressing her admiration, having it delivered to Kensington Palace the following day. Curtis received a letter from Princess Diana in response, thanking her for writing, and adding that “she looked forward to meeting,” at some point in the future.
Two months later, Diana passed away. Curtis, who had just returned to the UK, was in shock. After a quick glance at the news on TV, she preferred to turn off her television, fleeing from the images of the tragedy broadcast on a loop. Opting for a book instead, Curtis thought about Diana’s ability to “live wisely,” by finding a way out of “that bullshit sham contract of a marriage.” The actor also highlighted how the princess “talked about her own personal issues and demonstrated courage and compassion, putting her hand on the leg of the young man with HIV/AIDS and walking in the minefield.”
“I certainly thought that she had learned to live wisely,” given all of that, Curtis reflected in her social media post.
The actor’s tribute ends with a heartfelt appreciation for Diana’s ability to be a loving mother while also sharing that love with the world. “I think we all remember the image of her with her arms outstretched after being away from her sons as they ran toward her. She loved them in a way a royal person never had and she really loved the world and so she did love well and even though that day, this day, I’m still moved by her and her grace and courage, I’m also comforted in knowing that she lived a mindful wise, loving life,” Curtis writes.
