Journalist: IGP Officers Detained Me for Three Days and Threatened Me at Gunpoint Over Court Injunction I Posted on Instagram

Journalist and Media Room Hub founder Azuka Ogujiuba has accused officers from the office of the Inspector General of Police (IGP) of unlawfully detaining her for three days over the publication of a court injunction on her Instagram page.

Ogujiuba told journalists that officers Moses Jolugbo and Ifeoma Ogoli allegedly orchestrated her ordeal after businessman Adewale Oladapo filed a petition against her for supposed cyberbullying and defamation. She clarified that the post in question was an official court injunction, not a personal attack.

She questioned why she was singled out, noting that more than 20 media outlets had published the same document. Ogujiuba said the officers initially invited her for questioning on August 6, then later stormed her office during an interview, harassed her in front of her guest, and forcibly detained her.

According to her account, she was held for three days without food, denied access to her lawyer and family, and threatened at gunpoint. She said she honored the police invitation because of her respect for law and order.

Ogujiuba recounted, “It was Adewale Oladapo who petitioned against me for alleged cyberbullying and defamation. They showed me my Instagram page where I published a court injunction. I explained it was a court-approved document and not cyberbullying. Nearly 20 other media outlets had published it, yet I was the only one targeted.”

She added, “Two days later, during an exclusive interview, the same officers appeared, harassed me, seized my phone, and forced me to their office. They insisted I had failed to take down the court injunction. I was traumatised, couldn’t sleep, and had no access to my family or lawyer. They locked me up for three days without food, with guns pointed at me.”

Ogujiuba expressed concern that such misuse of authority reflects poorly on the Nigerian police and said she hoped the IGP was unaware of the incident.
