JUST IN: Army confirms killing of officer by wife in Akwa Ibom

The Nigerian Army has confirmed the killing of one of its officers, Lieutenant Samson Haruna by his wife, Retyit Obadiah Haruna at the Willington Bassey Barracks in Akwa Ibom State.

The Nigerian Army 2 Brigade in a statement issued by its Assistant Director, Lawal Muhammad said Haruna was killed during a domestic dispute with his wife on September 22, 2025.

Politics Nigeria gathered that Haruna, Regimental Medical Officer of 6 Battalion, died as a result of the injury he sustained after he was set ablaze by his wife.

Married for about six months, the newlyweds who lived at the barracks had been involved in a heated argument that escalated due to some family crisis.

During the argument, the Army said Mrs Haruna allegedly set properties in the house ablaze with the deceased caught up in the inferno.

According to the statement, the officer was taken to the Battalion Medical Facility, where he was stabilised before being transferred to the University of Uyo Teaching Hospital for further treatment.

He, however succumbed to death in the early hours of Tuesday, October 8.

Further describing the officer’s death as tragic, Muhammad condemned the incident on behalf of the Nigerian Army. He also commiserated with the family of the late officer.

‘’The Nigerian Army strongly condemns this act of domestic violence, recognising the imperative of peaceful coexistence and respect within families. We extend our heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family of Lieutenant Haruna.

‘’The Nigerian Army will continue to advocate healthy relationships, address domestic violence, and foster a culture of respect and dialogue within families and communities.

‘’The Nigerian Army is calling for all parties to remain calm while awaiting the outcome of the military police investigation,” Muhammad said in the statement.
