JUST IN: FG Drops Charges Against Ibom Air Passenger, Reduces Kwam 1’s Ban
The Federal Government has withdrawn criminal complaints against Ms. Comfort Emmanson and Fuji musician Wasiu Ayinde Marshall (popularly known as KWAM 1) over separate incidents of unruly conduct at Nigerian airports.
Aviation Minister Festus Keyamo disclosed this on Wednesday, following consultations with stakeholders in the aviation sector. He said the decisions were taken on compassionate grounds after the parties involved showed remorse.
In the case of Ms. Emmanson, who was arrested on August 10 aboard an Ibom Air flight, Keyamo said the airline agreed to drop its complaint. The Police are expected to complete her release process from Kirikiri Prison this week, while the Airline Operators of Nigeria have agreed to lift her lifetime flight ban.
For KWAM 1, the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has reduced his flight ban to one month and will work with him as an ambassador for airport security protocol. The NCAA will also withdraw its criminal complaint against him.
Additionally, ValueJet pilots involved in the same incident will have their licences restored after serving the one-month suspension and undergoing mandatory professional reappraisal.
Keyamo further directed aviation and related agencies to begin a retreat next week to retrain security personnel on managing disruptive passengers and de-escalating tensions. Airlines will also review staff conduct towards passengers.
“These decisions are purely on compassionate grounds,” the minister said, adding that safety and security in the aviation sector remain a top priority.
