JUST IN: NYSC resumes payment of arrears to corps members after break

The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has resumed the payment of arrears to corps members, marking the first disbursement since June 3 following a two-month suspension.

The arrears cover the new ₦77,000 monthly allowance recently approved by the Federal Government and apply to corps members, including those who have already completed their service.

NYSC Director-General, Brigadier General Olakunle Nafiu, had earlier assured that all eligible corps members would benefit from the increment once funds were released.

Speaking during the Batch A 2025 Pre-Mobilisation Workshop in Abuja on April 5, he said:

“Once funds are released to us to offset the arrears, we will pay them. Even our corps members who passed out recently will benefit. We have their bank details.”

Nafiu stressed that the government remained committed to its promises, saying Nigerians should not doubt its responsibility to the welfare of youths.

The latest payment, covering July 2024 to March 2025, follows weeks of frustration over delays in implementing the allowance increase, which was introduced to cushion the effects of economic hardship on young Nigerians.

A recently discharged corps member, who confirmed receiving the arrears but requested anonymity, told newsmen, “After waiting for two months, I didn’t expect to see another payment alert.

“But honestly, it’s not just about the money; it’s about feeling like our efforts actually count.”
