Kano governor Abba Yusuf defects to APC with 34 lawmakers, 44 council chairmen

Kano State Governor, Abba Yusuf, on Monday defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC), leading a sweeping political realignment that includes 34 lawmakers, 44 local government chairmen and hundreds of party officials and appointees.

Announcing the move after wide consultations, Yusuf said the decision was guided by an assessment of Kano State’s future aspirations and the need to align more closely with the Federal Government to fast-track development.

The governor said his return to the APC would enable him to work more effectively with President Bola Tinubu in delivering the dividends of democracy to the people of Kano, describing the move as “a choice for progress over pride.”

According to him, the Renewed Hope Agenda of the Tinubu administration is already yielding positive results across the country, making cooperation with the ruling party imperative for Kano’s growth.

Yusuf also announced plans to establish a Kano Elders Council aimed at promoting political stability, unity and good governance in the state.

He commended key APC leaders, including former Kano State governor and ex-APC national chairman, Abdullahi Ganduje, as well as the Deputy Senate President, Barau Jibrin, for their roles and support in facilitating his return to the party.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Yusuf was formally received into the APC alongside Ganduje, Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin, Senator Kawu Sumaila and several members of the House of Representatives.

The governor recalled that he was previously a member of the APC, having joined the party in 2014 and winning its primary election for the Kano Central Senatorial seat.

Explaining his latest defection, Yusuf cited governance realities, national cohesion and the need for accelerated development, describing the APC as a familiar and well-structured platform for progressive governance.

“I am entering the APC together with 22 state lawmakers, eight federal legislators, 44 local government chairmen and 484 councillors,” he said.

“We will work collectively to advance the party’s noble ideals for the overall political development of Kano State.

“Our mission is to advance the Kano agenda, which remains our primary concern, not personal interest.”
