The family of the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu , has alleged that operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) are deliberately frustrating his efforts to prepare for his terrorism trial scheduled for Friday.
In a statement issued on Thursday and signed by Prince Emmanuel Kanu, the family warned that the IPOB leader might be unable to appear in court, not by choice, but due to what they described as systemic denial of his constitutional rights.
The family accused the DSS of obstructing Kanu’s access to his lawyers, family members, and key witnesses needed for his defence.
According to them, “The DSS has made it almost impossible for Mazi Kanu to have proper access to his lawyers, family members and key witnesses.”
They also claimed the DSS refused to allow Kanu to file the necessary court documents ahead of the hearing slated for Friday, November 7, 2025.
The family further stated, “Mazi Nnamdi Kanu may not be able to appear in court on Friday, not because he does not want to, but because he has been denied the chance to get ready and defend himself.”
The statement accused the DSS of actions that undermine Kanu’s right to a fair hearing: “Stopping his visitors, including family members and lawyers, and recording his meetings with them instead of allowing private discussions.
“Refusing to give him access to a computer and printer needed to prepare his legal documents.
“Blocking him from filing his court papers and declining to take him to the registry to submit documents for his defence.”
The family insisted the alleged actions violate the Nigerian Constitution and international human rights norms.
The statement accused the security agency of engineering a situation that could allow the case to be decided against Kanu.
They stated, “What the DSS is doing is unfair, unlawful, and intentional. They are making it difficult for him to defend himself so that the case can be decided against him.”
They warned that if Kanu fails to appear in court, the DSS and the Federal Government must be held responsible.
Calling for global attention, the family urged international bodies to intervene.
Kanu’s family said, “The United Nations, African Union, European Union, Commonwealth, human rights groups and all who believe in justice should pay close attention.”
They accused the government of projecting the rule of law abroad while allegedly suppressing fundamental rights at home.
They added, “The Nigerian Government cannot claim to follow the rule of law while silencing a defendant and blocking his right to a fair hearing.”
