KENYA: 10 Dead, 11 Injured in Night Accident Involving PSV & Truck

At least 10 people have been confirmed dead, while 11 others sustained injuries following a tragic road accident at Malaha Junction along the Webuye-Kitale Highway in Bungoma County.

The fatal crash, which occurred on Monday night, involved a truck that rammed into several vehicles, including a Public Service Vehicle (PSV) and a boda boda, causing a devastating chain collision.

According to the Western Region Traffic Police Commander Walter Cheboren, the accident left several people dead on the spot, while others were seriously injured.

Witnesses at the scene revealed the truck reportedly lost control before ramming into the PSV and motorcycle that were near the busy junction.

The impact left bodies lying on the road as rescuers and other motorists rushed to help victims before emergency services arrived.

Widely shared images and clips of the accident showed the matatu severely damaged, with bodies spotted scattered on the road as emergency services conducted rescue operations.

Survivors were taken to hospitals in the Webuye area, where they are currently receiving treatment, while the area traffic police immediately began clearing the wreckage to restore traffic along the busy highway.

In a statement, Westlands Member of Parliament Tim Wanyonyi expressed deep sorrow following the tragedy, sending condolences to families who lost their loved ones in the accident.

Wanyonyi described the incident as heartbreaking and urged motorists to exercise caution, particularly at known accident blackspots and busy junctions.

“This tragedy is a sobering reminder of the fragility of life. I urge all road users to exercise extreme caution and vigilance,” he said.

The legislator further urged transport and safety agencies to implement urgent measures along the Malaha-Lugulu stretch of the highway to prevent similar accidents in the future.

“I urge all motorists and road users to exercise extreme caution and vigilance, particularly at known blackspots and busy junctions. Safety must always be our primary concern,” he added.

Malaha Junction has previously been flagged by motorists as a risky section of the Webuye-Kitale road due to heavy traffic and frequent high-speed vehicles.

Police have since launched investigations into the cause of the accident as families begin the painful process of identifying victims.
