The former Chelsea goalkeeper came in for the final and gifted Manchester City the opening goal after he failed to hold on to the ball, allowing Nico O’Reilly to score the first of his two goals.
It was a result that extended Arsenal’s trophy drought to six years as they failed to banish their past painful memories of the Carabao Cup final.
Carabao Cup prize money The Carabao Cup doesn’t offer huge monetary gains to whoever wins it compared to the FA Cup. Arsenal and Manchester City were in it purely for prestige and psychological purposes ahead of the Premier League title run-in
The winner of the competition takes home £100,000 (KSh 17.6 million) in tournament prize money, as BBC Sport notes.
Additionally, winning the Carabao Cup earns a team a ticket to enter the playoff rounds of the Conference League, though a team can cede its spot if it qualifies for higher European competitions, i.e, Champions League and Europa League. Manchester City will definitely cede their place as they are sure of a Champions League spot next season.
How much Arsenal will get after losing Carabao Cup final The beaten finalists at Wembley will get half of that, which is £50,000 (KSh 8.8 million), while the semi-finalists will get £25,000 each (KSh 4.4 million). Chelsea and Newcastle United were the beaten semi-finalists.
Speaking after the game, Arteta admitted that he was sad and the result had left a ‘bad taste’ in their mouths.
“Well, very sad, very hard one to take, especially for our players and our supporters because we know how much it means to them and how much we want it, and the fact that we haven’t managed to deliver that obviously is disappointing and sad and it leaves you with a really bad taste,” he said via the club’s website.
