The County Government of Siaya has directed all civil servants who failed to attend the county’s Mashujaa Day celebrations to submit written explanations for their non-attendance.
This is after less than 200 county staff attended the annual ceremony held at the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga grounds on Monday, October 20.
Siaya County Commissioner Mobert Komora expressed his disappointment over the low turnout, warning of dire consequences for government workers who intentionally skipped the event.
“Days of national celebrations are supposed to be observed by all civil servants. It is not their day to stay at home to watch television. They are supposed to be here,” Komora stated.

Addressing the gathering at the Jaramogi grounds, the County Commissioner directed his deputy to immediately conduct a roll call of all government officers present at the event.
While directing all workers absent from the ceremony to offer written explanations, Komora cautioned that non-compliance with the directive would result in the issuance of show-cause letters and subsequent disciplinary actions.
He went ahead to dare civil servants who felt unwilling to serve Kenyans, particularly during national events such as the Mashujaa Day ceremony, to consider resigning.
“If they do not work for the government, or the Siaya County government, they can kindly tender their resignation letters; we will find other people who can work for the government,” he added.
Nonetheless, the low turnout during this year’s Mashujaa Day celebrations was witnessed across several regions in Kenya. Besides Siaya, a low turnout was also seen in Mombasa County.
However, Mombasa County Commissioner Mohammed Nur attributed the low turnout in the county to the Sunday burial of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga that took place in Bondo, Siaya County.
Meanwhile, this year’s Mashujaa Day celebrations were dedicated to Odinga, who passed away last week on Wednesday, at the age of 80. He was buried on Sunday, October 19, at his father’s home Kang’o ka Jaramogi in Bondo, Siaya county.
The event was held in recognition of his immense sacrifice in shaping the transformation of Kenya. Speaking in Kitui County, President William Ruto accorded Odinga the highest honours of the nation – Chief of the order of the Golden Heart.
