KENYA: Fidel Odinga’s Ex-Wife Moves to Claim His Unclaimed Bank Assets

The late Fidel Odinga’s ex-wife, Lwam Getachew Bekele, has moved to claim her deceased husband’s financial assets currently held by a local bank.

The Unclaimed Financial Assets Authority (UFAA) made the announcement in a gazette notice dated Friday, October 17, confirming that Lwam had applied to be appointed as the administrator of her late husband’s unclaimed funds.

Fidel, the eldest son of the recently deceased former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, appeared on a list of individuals whose assets have received an acting administrator.

In this case, an administrator is legally authorized to manage the property or finances of a deceased person after completing a formal process that includes filling out the required forms and obtaining a letter of no objection from the deceased’s beneficiaries.

Following Lwam Getachew Bekele’s application to take custody of her late husband Fidel Odinga’s financial assets, the Unclaimed Financial Assets Authority (UFAA) has issued a 30-day public notice inviting any individual with a competing claim to file an objection.

According to the Authority, if no objection is lodged within the stipulated period, the assets in question will be transferred to Bekelle.

“The Unclaimed Financial Assets Authority has received claims for unclaimed assets from the following persons claiming as administrators of the estates of deceased persons and agents of the original owners,” read part of the gazette notice.

The Authority further stated,

“Unless an objection to the claims is lodged at the offices of the Authority at the address below within thirty (30) days from the date hereof, payment will be made to the aforementioned person.”

This means that once the 30-day window lapses without any challenge, Bekele will officially gain control over Fidel’s unclaimed financial holdings.

Fidel Odinga married his Eritrean partner Lwam Bekele at a private wedding in July 2012 at the Greek Orthodox Church on Valley Road, Nairobi. The couple welcomed their first child in 2013, marking a joyous chapter in their union.

However, their marriage was short-lived. Barely two years after the grand wedding, the two announced their divorce, bringing their relationship to an end.

Before marrying Bekele, Fidel had previously been married to Veronica Wanjiru, his first wife.
