Gabriel started Brazil’s friendly match against Senegal at the Emirates Stadium on Saturday evening. The Arsenal centre-back settled in well alongside Marquinhos until the 64th minute, when he went down.
He clutched at his inner thigh as he went off the pitch with Wesley Fraca taking his place. The 27-year-old is now out of Brazil’s next game against Tunisia as Carlo Ancelotti’s side ramp up preparations for next year’s World Cup.
Why Arsenal could be paid for Gabriel’s injury As for his club, they will await further tests to know how long he will be out for. The only respite that can come the Gunners’ way is the compensation they could get if the injury is serious.
In 2012, FIFA started compensating clubs whose players were injured during international duty under the Club Protection Programme.
However, as the BBC Sport reports, for a club to be eligible for this payment, the player must be out for 28 consecutive days after the injury resulting from an ‘accident’.

At the moment, Newcastle United are a beneficiary of the scheme as their new signing Yoanne Wissa got injured while playing for DR Congo before he had even made his debut for his new club.
Gabriel’s stats this season Arsenal will be hoping that their defender isn’t out for that long. The Brazilian has been Arteta’s first-choice alongside William Saliba and has been integral on both ends of the pitch.
He has featured 17 times across all competitions, scoring two goals and setting up three others. They have also only shipped in five goals all season.
Gabriel’s injury update The injuries come at a time when Arsenal have a tricky run of fixtures. They host their rivals, Tottenham Hotspur, in a North London derby after the international break, before they face Bayern Munich and Chelsea.
“Bad? I don’t know, he had a problem with his adductor, the medical staff have to check tomorrow. We are really sorry for this, really disappointed when players have an injury. I hope they can recover well and soon,” said Ancelotti after the game. Arsenal are also waiting for feedback on Riccardo Calafiori’s injury, who failed to train with Italy ahead of their game against Moldova in the World Cup qualifiers.
