KENYA: Govt Issues Update on Construction of Feeder Port Connecting Four Counties

The phase II  redevelopment of the Homa Bay  Pier, into a modern feeder port,  is now at 70 per cent, the Ministry of Interior has revealed.

In a statement on Monday, February 23, Interior Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo said that this phase of the reconstruction is currently focusing on the port’s infrastructure.

A pier is a raised platform that extends from the shore into a water body and is often used for docking boats and ships, and also, fishermen can use it for fishing.

The ongoing works in this phase include the construction of modern terminal buildings, warehouses supported by three power houses, a ferry waiting bay, and a permanent Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) office.

The phase also includes other security and operational facilities, such as a pedestrian security check booth and two 32-cubic-metre water storage tanks.

“A few years ago, the Homa Bay lakefront stood as a neglected swampland; underutilised, disconnected, and largely forgotten,” Omollo stated.

“Today, it is being deliberately reclaimed and reimagined into a vibrant, integrated economic zone anchored on the redevelopment of the Homa Bay Pier,” he added.

The project will serve as a strategic connector for counties along the lakeshore, including Migori, Kisumu, Siaya, and Busia, according to Omollo

Omollo assured that the project is being implemented under the oversight of the Department for Internal Security and National Administration to guarantee security and uninterrupted progress.

The PS has further revealed that the government is currently constructing a new public ferry linking Homa Bay to Kisumu, Mbita, and other islands, such as Mfangano, to improve the mobility of goods in the region.

Other developments that have been completed near the pier include a modern fish market and a newly established lakefront amphitheatre, one of the first of its kind along Lake Victoria, designed to enhance tourism, cultural activities, and community events.

“Adjacent to the pier is a modern fish market that has already been commissioned, serving over 2,000 traders and equipped with cold storage facilities and hygienic trading stalls to support value addition and food safety,” Omollo stated.
