The 26-year-old noted that process stretched over three years, marked by paperwork, uncertainty and long periods of waiting.

She was married to a Ugandan man, and when he got a scholarship to Canada, he took her along, and they lived there from 1993 to 1998 before moving to the US from 1999 to 2025.
