However, as the Reds skipper wheeled away in celebration, the linesman had his flag up, prompting a VAR review.

Van Dijk himself wasn’t offside, but the bone of contention was Andrew Robertson, who was clearly behind the last man.

Robertson ducked just before the ball flew past him and Gianluigi Donnarumma and into the back of the net.

The VAR, Michael Oliver, confirmed that Robertson’s actions affected Donnarumma and thus agreed with the on-field decision to disallow the goal.

Assistant referee: “Robertson’s in line of vision, right in front of the keeper. He’s ducked under the ball. He’s very, very close to him. I think he’s in line of vision. I think he’s (Donnarumma) been impacted, mate.” Referee: “Ok so offside then.” Assistant referee: “I think offside.” Referee: “On-field decision is offside.” The matter is then referred to the VAR, who states that Robertson made a movement right in front of the goalkeeper. Oliver completes his communication with the words ‘check complete’.

VAR: “Checking the on-field decision of offside against Andy Robertson. Delay, delay. So you’ve got a clear offside position.” AVAR: “I agree with the on-field decision. I think it’s offside. It’s a clear, obvious action which clearly impacts the goalkeeper.” The VAR audio of Virgil Van Dijk’s disallowed goal against Manchester City. Photo credit, screengrab, Sky Sports.

He is in an offside position, very close to the goalkeeper and makes an obvious movement directly in front of him. Check complete, offside.” Head of referees, Howard Webb, backed the decision, calling it a subjective call that is left in the hands of the officials.

“Therefore, it’s no surprise that some people believe this goal should have stood, so I think it’s important that we look at the facts of what actually happened in this situation,” he said on the Match Officials Mic’d Up show. Pep Guardiola sends warning to Arsenal In a different story, Pep Guardiola revealed that he was impressed with the progress his team was making after watching his side beat the defending champions,

He issued a subtle warning, stating that the league is not won in October or November as he seeks to reclaim the title he lost last season.
