Former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i came to the defense of Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) leader Rigathi Gachagua, backing his claims of widespread looting within the Kenya Kwanza administration.
Speaking on Tuesday during a meeting with opposition leaders ahead of Gachagua’s return from the United States, Matiang’i accused the government of persecuting the former Deputy President for simply speaking the truth. He insisted that Gachagua’s concerns had been validated by reports from two international publications.
“What is happening here is looting, it’s not corruption. Massive looting of the country is happening, and we are just watching, but we should start resisting. When people like Rigathi start talking about it, they start getting arrest threats,” Matiang’i said.

The former CS specifically cited a report that accused the Kenyan government of facilitating the sale of arms to neighboring Sudan. He claimed that the administration’s silence on the matter suggested there could be some truth behind the allegations.
“Now they are just threatening to arrest Gachagua. Things become criminal when they come out of Rigathi’s mouth. They should stop thinking that Kenyans are foolish. They are the same people who told us there are no more fools in Kenya,” he added.
Matiang’i urged Kenyans to reject what he described as a looting regime and to remain vocal despite threats of arrest against leaders exposing corruption and theft.
He further emphasized the severity of the situation, warning that looting was far more dangerous than ordinary corruption, as no country could survive under such conditions.
“Some countries can survive corruption, and some institutions can survive corruption, but I don’t know of a country that can survive looting,” he said.
