KENYA: MP Loses Phone During Empowerment Event

An empowerment event in Saboti was briefly derailed after Kabuchai Member of Parliament Majimbo Kalasinga allegedly lost his mobile phone. 

The event, which was a women’s empowerment forum, was hosted by Saboti MP Caleb Amisi, drawing a large crowd including several leaders from the region. 

News of the lawmaker’s missing device was made public by his counterpart, Amisi, who made a public appeal to anyone who may have picked up the phone to return it. 

“Hon. Majimbo Kalasinga has lost his phone right here. Please, if you have it, return it to him. He has come to offer a contribution for the youth, but unfortunately, his phone has gone missing. Let’s show respect to the guests, okay?” Amisi said.

Prior to the incident, Kasinga had addressed the forum before asking to leave the event early to attend a separate event in his Kabuchai Constituency. 

Among the guests at the event were Githunguri MP Gathoni Wamuchomba, Kitutu Chache MP Oliver Gesairo and Bumula MP Jack Wamboka. 

Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) Secretary General Edwin Sifuna was the chief guest at the event, with the forum coming at a time when a section of youthful leaders were pushing for a youth-driven transformation of the Western and Nyanza regions. 

At the time of publication of this article, it remains unclear whether Kalasinga had recovered his phone. 

During the forum, Sifuna also stirred mild controversy after suggesting he might face a tough choice to leave ODM if the party  decided to support the Kenya Kwanza government  in the 2027 elections.

The vocal Nairobi Senator reiterated that he remained committed to ODM’s principles and would not be part of any deal that supports the ruling party.

He also took a swipe at his critics who have questioned his loyalty to ODM, particularly over his occasional public statements that appear to contradict party messaging. Sifuna clarified that while he would continue to read statements issued by ODM organs, there was one type he would never endorse.

“I will read all the updates and releases by the party, except one. The day they say ODM has agreed to join hands and support UDA in the 2027 elections, that I will not read,” Sifuna declared.
