Source: Facebook A mother in Nairobi became emotional while trying to console her young son, Peniel, who could not comprehend that Raila was truly dead.
Olivia Dayo told TUKO.co.ke that her son came home from school, turned on the television, and saw the news that ODM leader had passed away.
Peniel watched intently for a while before turning to his mother with a question that left her teary-eyed.
“I thought I was done crying, but then my son asked, ‘Mum, what killed RAO?’ I told him he died of cardiac arrest. He asked how that was even possible, especially since Baba was so rich and powerful,” Olivia explained. Not satisfied with his mother’s answer, Peniel asked what exactly had been wrong with Raila, and Olivia admitted she didn’t know.
She tried to explain to him that death is the ultimate equaliser, rendering all earthly distinctions meaningless.
“He couldn’t take my explanation and shouted, ‘Lies!’ with tears welling up in his eyes. I told him that death finds us all equal, no matter our status or wealth. It levels the playing field, reminding us that we are all mortal,” Olivia said. To Peniel, Raila was immortal, and he couldn’t understand why people were saying he was dead.
The emotional mother found herself struggling to explain to her son that, just like all of them, Raila was simply a human being.
“At that point, I wished he were still at school so he wouldn’t have witnessed Raila’s burial. It would have saved me the pain of explaining and the heartache of seeing my son cry,” she said. Olivia told TUKO.co.ke that calming Peniel wasn’t easy, but she eventually managed to do so.
