KENYA: Nairobi Terror Plot Foiled: How Detectives Stopped a Major Attack Planned for Ramadan

Detectives from Kenya’s Counter Terrorism Policing Unit have foiled a planned terror attack in Nairobi linked to suspected Al-Shabaab militants, authorities confirmed on Wednesday, February 18, 2026.

The breakthrough followed months of intensive surveillance, during which investigators closely monitored the suspects’ movements, digital communications, and supply chains. Acting on specific intelligence, officers conducted targeted raids that uncovered a significant cache of weapons, including assault rifles, pistols, and explosives intended for use in the capital.

“Plans by the terrorist group Al-Shabaab to kill many Kenyans in Nairobi have once again been foiled by the intelligence agency,” the Counter Terrorism unit stated.

Attack Planned During Ramadan
Early investigations indicate the suspects were plotting to launch the attack during the holy month of Ramadan, a period when Muslims worldwide observe prayer and fasting. Authorities said the group was also exploring other criminal activities, including the potential kidnapping of foreign nationals.

“Months of surveillance and covert intelligence gathering on a terror network operating within the Dadaab refugee camps led to the recovery of arms and ammunition, including 600 bullets, pistols, and explosives, all destined for targets in Nairobi,” the officers revealed.

“The terrorists, who had planned to attack during the month of Ramadan, were also exploring possibilities of kidnapping foreigners and hijacking vehicles,” they added.

Heightened Security Measures
Following the raids, security teams have intensified patrols, reinforced checkpoints, and increased surveillance in areas identified as high-risk. The Counter Terrorism unit credited the operation to the dedication of Kenya’s security personnel.

“Nairobi remains safe because of the brave young men and women in our security agencies who spend long hours tracking down dangerous terrorists and criminals,” detectives said.

Authorities have launched further investigations, with forensic experts analyzing the recovered weapons. The aim is to trace and apprehend additional members of the terror network connected to the foiled plot, ensuring Nairobi’s continued safety and preventing future attacks.
