KENYA: Rigathi Gachagua: Political Gangs Now Terrorising Kenyans in Broad Daylight

Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has raised alarm over the rising cases of insecurity in the country, citing the recent murder of Nairobi lawyer Kyallo Mbobu, who was shot dead in a drive-by attack in Karen, Nairobi.

Speaking in Nyeri County on Sunday, September 14, 2025, Gachagua linked the surge in insecurity to gangs that were once mobilized for political purposes.

“We now have gangs with knives robbing people in broad daylight. The gangs were used to doing politics, and now that the politics are over, they have to make a living and are now terrorising Kenyans. Those gangs will be dismantled, and security restored,” he said.

The DCP leader also linked the increasing insecurity to bodabodas, saying they are the go-to mode of transport for assassins.

“You saw a few days ago, a lawyer, my neighbour in Karen, was shot eight times by professional killers. People are so scared in the country. You don’t know who has been paid to assassinate you. The motorbikes are now worrisome. You shiver every time a motorbike follows your car,” he added.

“Those were professional, not ordinary people. They shot him in the head to ensure that he would not survive,” Gachagua remarked.

A day earlier, on Saturday, September 13, Gachagua had reaffirmed his presidential bid, vowing to confront runaway insecurity and restore order.
