KENYA: Rowdy Youth Snatch Loaded Pistol from Governor’s Bodyguard at Raila Burial

Police investigations are underway after an officer attached to Kakamega Governor Fernandez Barasa was robbed of his pistol loaded with 15 bullets during the burial of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga in Bondo, Siaya County on Sunday.

Barasa’s bodyguard, Constable Benson Kodia Olayo drawn from the General Service Unit(GSU) Headquarters, Ruaraka, reported that he was robbed of the firearm and ammunition at about 4.30 pm. He reported that the dramatic incident unfolded as the State event ended and Raila’s body was being moved to the Odinga family home for the interment.

According to police reports, the officer was in the company of four other colleagues and were leaving the ceremony at Jaramogi Oginga Odinga University of Science and Technology (JOOUST) at the main gate when he lost the weapon.

PC Olayo reported that while boarding the Governor’s official vehicle, rowdy youth who had milled around Governor Barasa snatched his Jericho pistol loaded with 15 rounds from its holster and ran away from the scene. The bodyguard aslo reported suffering bruises as he attempted to recover the weapon in the midst of the rowdy crowd.

Police have intensified efforts to recover the stolen weapon, saying the suspects fled the scene but remain on their radar.
