Curious Kenyans who experienced the strange and dizzying movements went to social media platforms to find out from their compatriots if they had experienced something of the sort and clear doubts that it was not them they were not disillusioned or high on something.

As at 10:52pm, Volcano Discovery which gives near real time updates on quakes hade received 166 reports of individuals from around Nairobi and Thika indicating they had felt a tremor at around 10:27pm.

According to Chile Alerta, an app that gives near real time updates on recent earthquakes, tsunami bulletins and meteorological bulletins detailing the the magnitude, date of occurrence of the event and time in Chile, there was a seismic warning for Nairobi.

The application includes this information in a map view to help users know exact location of the occurrence.

“Seismic warning. Earthquake in Kenya- Nairobi,” tweted Chile Alerta.There was no immediate establishment of the magnitude of the earthquake with some people saying the movements were aftershock of an earthquake that had happened in Manila Philippines earlier.

Strongest earthquake to occur in KenyaEarthquakes are not a common occurrence in Nairobi and Kenya in general.

According to Volcano Discovery, the strongest earthquake to ever happen in Kenya in the 1900s occurred on Friday, January 6, 1928.

The quake had a magnitude of 7.0 and occurred 21km South East of Kabarnet in Baringo county at around 7:31 pm.

KitawarambaSome Kenyans narrated the dull and nerve-racking experiences they had for the few seconds they experienced the tremor while others made fun of the happening, linking it to cult issues happening in Shakahola, Malindi in Kilifi county.
