KENYA: Wetang’ula Vows to End Luhya Community’s Long Wait for Presidency

National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula has declared his ambition to succeed President William Ruto as Kenya’s sixth head of state.

Addressing residents in Bumula, Bungoma County, on Sunday, September 21, 2025, Wetang’ula said he is ready to throw his hat into the presidential race once Ruto completes his tenure.

“I want to be the president of Kenya. Masinde Muliro passed on when he was close to power, as did Wamalwa Kijana. When Masinde Muliro died, it took us 10 years to get a leader, who was Wamalwa. When Wamalwa died, it took me another 10 years to reach where I am,” he said, reflecting on how past Luhya leaders narrowly missed the presidency.

Focus on Building a Strong Home Base
Wetang’ula acknowledged that his dream of occupying State House depends on uniting his home base. He emphasized that the Luhya community must speak with one voice to strengthen their influence in national politics.

He said he remains determined to end the long wait for the Luhya community to produce a president.

“When you want to be a leader, you must allow other people to use your shoulders to climb to power so that when your time arrives, they will also give you their shoulder to climb.”

“Personally, I am doing so, for the Luhya community’s dream of wanting to rule the country will be determined by the 2027 elections. We will support William Ruto, and after his term in 2032, I will be ready to take over from him; the field will be open,” he added.

The Speaker also underscored the importance of regional unity, urging leaders in Western Kenya to speak with one voice.

“In this region, we have to speak with one voice like others. You go to other regions; like in Nyanza, they respect Raila. Ruto is equally revered in his Kalenjin Land, and so is Kalonzo when he speaks to the Kamba nation, but here at home, things are different. We have to support each other in this journey,” he stated.
