According to Raburu, after selling the car, he was left with no choice but to settle the debt he had accrued because he was using taxis and getting things from the shop.

“Someone from the car yard came and said they will buy the engine for the car. So if you bought it at KSh 680,000, then 25 per cent of the resale value will come to KSh 550,000 or KSh 600,000 if you are lucky. Do not forget the engine cost this person KSh 400,000, and other things that need to be changed. Now I am looking at KSh 200,000. That lady drove, came, we looked, and she came with cash. She gave me KSh 75,000 in an envelope. And I was still paying loans,” he said. According to Raburu, he started using taxis because each time he got into a matatu, people would make him pay transport for everyone.

“I started accruing taxi debt. That and that of the kiosk were about KSh 50,000. Now I only had my clean KSh 20,000,” he said. Raburu added that the lifestyle taught him to adjust, which has now helped him with his current life. He credited his wife, Ivy Namu, for also keeping him grounded.
