The Directorate of Mobilisation and Integration (DMI) of the Labour Party has called on security agencies to investigate the public harassment of Julius Abure, the party’s national chairman, at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja.
Abure was reportedly accosted on Friday by a woman identified as Precious Oruche, popularly known as “Mama P”, who hurled insults at him while recording the encounter. The incident caused a scene before security personnel intervened.
In a statement issued on Saturday and signed by Audu Caleb on behalf of the DMI director general, the group described the episode as “disgraceful, dangerous, and unacceptable”, stressing that no political leader or citizen should be subjected to mob-style harassment in public spaces.
The DMI alleged that anti-democratic elements may have sponsored the confrontation and urged Peter Obi, the party’s 2023 presidential candidate, to caution his supporters to ensure political activism remains peaceful and respectful.
“We condemn this attack on Barr. Julius Abure in the strongest terms. Such actions have no place in a democratic society,” the statement read.
The directorate also criticised Yunusa Tanko, leader of the Obidient Movement, for his recent call for mass mobilisation in support of Mama P, warning that such rhetoric could inflame tensions.
It cautioned that failure to address such incidents could set a dangerous precedent where political supporters openly attack perceived opponents in public spaces.
“Nigeria’s capital and public spaces must remain safe, secure, and dignified. We will not allow street violence to define our democracy,” it added.
