Lagos Approves Three-Month Discount Window For Replacement Of Faded Vehicle Number Plates

The Lagos State Government has approved a three-month discount window for motorists to replace faded and unreadable vehicle number plates, in a move aimed at improving road safety and strengthening security across the state.

The approval was granted by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, and disclosed by the Permanent Secretary of the Motor Vehicles Administration Agency (MVAA), Mr Rasheed Muri-Okunola, in a statement posted on the official Facebook page of the Lagos State Government on Wednesday.

Describing the initiative as a proactive and citizen-friendly intervention, Muri-Okunola said the rebate was designed to encourage voluntary compliance among motorists while easing the financial burden associated with replacing worn-out number plates.

“The Lagos State Government has approved a three-month rebate window for motorists to replace faded and unreadable vehicle number plates, as part of renewed efforts to enhance road safety, improve vehicle identification, and strengthen security across the state,” the statement read in part.

According to the state government, clear and legible number plates are critical to effective traffic management, public safety, and crime prevention.

It noted that faded or unclear plates pose significant challenges to law enforcement agencies, particularly in vehicle identification, crime detection, and the operation of digital vehicle tracking systems.

Muri-Okunola explained that the discount window would give vehicle owners sufficient time to regularise their documentation, especially in the light of the recent increase in the cost of number plates nationwide.

He emphasised that the rebate applies strictly to faded, worn, or unclear number plates and does not cover new vehicle registrations.

Motorists seeking to benefit from the initiative have been advised to visit the MVAA One-Stop Centre in Oshodi or any MVAA office across the state.

The government also cautioned residents against engaging unauthorised agents, warning that all transactions should be carried out only through official MVAA channels.

Although the state government did not disclose the exact percentage or amount of the discount, the initiative comes against the backdrop of a revised fee structure for vehicle number plates approved by the Joint Tax Board (JTB) in 2025.

The new rates, which took effect nationwide from June 8, 2025, were introduced following the deployment of enhanced security features and rising production costs.

Under the current structure, standard private and commercial vehicle number plates cost N30,000 each, articulated vehicle plates N90,000, dealer plates N100,000, and fancy vehicle number plates as much as N400,000, with varying rates for government and motorcycle plates.

With these higher costs now in place, the Lagos State Government’s three-month discount window offers motorists a timely opportunity to replace faded number plates at a reduced cost, even though the precise level of the rebate remains unspecified.

The government said the initiative reflects its approach of balancing enforcement with empathy, while signalling stricter attention to vehicle identification standards in Lagos.

For motorists who act early, the window provides a chance to comply with regulations, improve road safety, and contribute to enhanced security across the state.
