Legal representatives of four landowners have renewed calls on the Taraba State government to settle an outstanding judgment debt of N80 million related to land acquired for the establishment of the Federal University, Wukari.
In a letter dated September 26, 2025 addressed to Governor Agbu Kefas, the lead counsel, Barrister P.M Shagnah urged the government to honor a court-sanctioned settlement agreement in Suit No: TRS/6/2014, involving Danladi Joel Boushe and three others as plaintiffs against the governor of Taraba State and four others.
Shagnah explained that the case had been amicably resolved through a “Terms of Settlement” agreement, which was duly signed by both parties and endorsed by the state’s Attorney General, Yakubu Maikasuwa, SAN.
According to the legal team, the total judgment sum was N205 million following a voluntary waiver of N50.2 million by the plaintiffs as a show of goodwill.
“The agreement stipulated that the amount would be paid in seven equal installments of N29.29 million each, starting from December 2023 and ending in June 2024,” the letter read.
However, Shagnah disclosed that only N125 million has been paid to date, leaving a balance of N80 million.
He described the government’s failure to complete the payment as a breach of the court approval settlement which, according to him, undermines the spirit of the agreement.
“The plaintiffs, who made significant sacrifices to enable the establishment of the university, have faced financial difficulties since 2011 while awaiting justice and compensation,” he stated.
While appealing to the governor’s sense of responsibility, Shagnah described Kefas as a “responsive and responsible leader”, urging him to ensure the immediate payment of the outstanding balance.
He stressed that the funds were urgently needed and that full settlement would provide “huge relief” to the affected landowners.
