March 11, (THEWILL) – The BBC has announced that Gary Lineker, the former England striker, will not be presenting Match Of The Day on Saturday evening.
This comes after the 62-year-old became embroiled in a political row with the UK government over their new asylum policy. The decision was made due to Lineker’s recent social media activity, which the BBC has deemed to be a breach of their guidelines.
In response to the decision, Lineker stated on Twitter, “I understand this decision by the BBC and am saddened that the issue has been allowed to overshadow the coverage of the football.” He also added, “I recognise that I need to be more careful with my wording and ensure that my tweets do not give a misleading or unfair impression.”
Following the announcement, pundit and former Arsenal striker Ian Wright also stated that he would not be appearing on the English Premier League highlights show out of choice. Alan Shearer, another former England striker, followed suit by informing the BBC that he would not be appearing on Match Of The Day on Saturday night. In a statement, Shearer said, “I fully support Gary Lineker’s right to express his views, but it is important that we as BBC presenters remain impartial and avoid taking sides on political issues.”
The decision to remove Lineker from the show has caused a stir among fans and has highlighted the ongoing debate around freedom of speech and social media use. Many have taken to social media to express their views on the matter, with some calling for Lineker’s reinstatement and others supporting the BBC’s decision.
